To Shoe or Not to Shoe

Before Baby Zog was born, I very rarely asked for help or opinions from anyone. Well, times have changed. I need to know the answer to a very important question and I hope you parents of older babies will help me out here. Read closely here becuase this is crucial:

When does it stop being acceptable for my child to go barefoot in public? He wears shoes every day to school, but on the weekends he likes to be barefoot. He's almost 11 months old. So, one would think, he's still a baby so it's okay. On the other hand, he walks now. So does that make him a big boy who should wear shoes at all times? (Of course, if he's barefoot, we don't let him just stroll through Target - yucky!) Then there's the whole "no shirt, no shoes, no service" posting on local establishments. When does that start to apply to Baby Zog? Please post a comment and help me!!!

Humbly yours,
Mommy Zog

If his feet are never going to touch the ground, then leave the shoes off. As soon as Molly started walking, she had shoes on. She has been in school since she was one, so she has always had shoes on. Also, it just helps to have that support when they are learning to walk, they get used to them. Otherwise, he may object to shoes. The faster you can get him used to shoes, the less he will want to take them off. Good luck!

get some Robeez (or other soft leather shoe) for the weekends... then he can walk but won't feel like he has shoes on. of course, they'll get destroyed quickly on sidewalks & parking lots, but that's childhood!

Haha! then again...he does look 18 months more than 11! (my brother had the same "problem") in Montgomery, Alabama...3rd grade at school and 6th grade at church. i'm serious. some pediatrician YEARS ago (when we were little) decided that kids were healthier when they went barefoot. well, people are still living by it. paul decided it was the stupidest thing EVER and said he would NEVER carry our kids over the gravel parking lot at church if they were barefoot. haha again. i think he'd change his tune now that Addie can bat her eyes at him! anyway...maybe when your out he wears shoes but at home he goes barefoot? i guess it becomes a cleanliness/health issue at some point. i agree though, if his feet dont touch the floor, i'd say no shoes! (btw, i bought addie some shoes for winter today...will post about it later!) miss you! big hugs to you and neal and kisses to my future son-in-law!

A little late to the party, but we're of two minds on this outside the house. I always carry shoes along, usually sandals in the diaper bag, when H and I go out, but most of the time I keep shoes off. Who needs shoes in a car seat or a stroller or while watching/helping one's father eat barbecue?
That said, once it's time to play outside anywhere other than the back porch at home or the deck at the church office, sandals go on.
E prefers to put sandals on from the jump, which I can't blame in efficiency terms, as there's no need to stop whatever you're about to do to make sure the boy is properly shod.
My inclination is no shoes unless feet need protecting from bumps and scratches. Dust, dander, stray bacteria are all immune builders.
